A gay for you rock star romance written by two of my favorite authors, let me just be very clear, it doesn’t get much better than Halo by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine. ~ Slick, Guilty Pleasures
Blurb:
Massive world tours. Over a hundred million albums sold. Groupies galore.
Every day is a party for Viper and the guys of TBD, the biggest rock band in the world. But it all comes to a screeching halt when the lead singer walks out of the studio one day and never comes back.
Ear-blistering vocals. Butchered lyrics. Fame chasers.
After months of lackluster auditions, Viper, the lead guitarist and resident bad boy of the group, is ready to find solace in the bottom of a bottle. Time’s running out and the pressure’s on to find a new singer, but it isn’t until an angel walks through the door that the band’s prayers are answered.
Charismatic. Talented. Magic behind the mic. Halo is everything they’ve been looking for.
With a voice to match his stunning good looks, it isn’t long before Viper’s taking notice. But there are several reasons this is a bad idea:
1. Interpersonal relationships in the band are discouraged
2. Viper has already broken rule #1—big mistake
3. Halo is straight
Too bad Viper’s body isn’t listening to his head—at least not the one on his shoulders. But you can’t fake chemistry, not onstage and certainly not off it, and Viper and Halo? They have it in spades.
As both men try to resist the fire blazing between them, and the band is forced to reinvent themselves, it’ll be a complicated rise back to the top. But from the ashes of what was, something beautiful is born. Something better. And when the world finally sees Halo stretch his wings, they’ll discover what it’s like to fall for an angel.
BOOK ONE OF THE FALLEN ANGEL SERIES
A ROCK ROMANCE
Whenever Ella Frank and/or Brooke Blaine write a series about one couple, I know it is going to be a journey. I know I won’t get all the answers in the first book, or the second, and maybe not even the third, but I trust them to build the story around the characters, their experiences that shaped them, and the relationship they are building together, so while I am impatient about getting the rest of their story, I am perfectly happy with Halo and everything that transpired within the pages of this book. Halo can be described as a “gay for you” story, a genre which I adore as I believe you fall for a person, not their gender; it also happens to be a rock star romance…so yep, total crack for me.
The remaining members of one of the world’s biggest bands TBD must find a lead singer after theirs walks out while they are working on a new album and never returns. After many less than stellar contenders try out, they are blown away when Halo walks through the doors to audition. Everyone is blown away, but Viper, the band’s lead guitarist, whose immediate attraction to the seemingly straight Halo could spell trouble for the band.
I loved a lot about this book, the way Halo breathed new life into the band and how even the somewhat cynical Viper seemed to realize that despite Halo being very different from their former lead singer, he has that wow factor that could catapult them into the stratosphere. I was fascinated watching Halo’s reaction to Viper and the myriad of emotions he goes through as he tries to first deny and then accept that there is something about Viper that makes him want him, something he can’t deny. The slow burn between them was perfect and realistic given the circumstances and I have found that I really appreciate a slow burn romance as it gives readers a chance to really understand what the characters are thinking and feeling and given that this book is told from dual points of view make that even better.
While there is no doubt this book was about the attraction and growing feelings between Halo and Viper, it is also about the formation of their new band Fallen Angel and the ins and outs of the music world. It was interesting to see Halo’s response to being recognized and everything he has to deal with once fame hits. Halo is all wide-eyed wonderment and Viper is a bit jaded and a lot cynical which makes for an interesting combination.
By now you might have heard this book ends in a cliffhanger and as I am the first one to preach about how much I hate cliffhanger endings, let me assure you this isn’t one. This book leaves Halo and Viper in a HFN situation, is what they have a bit up in the air, yes, but neither one of them is on life support or in peril, they are freshly f*cked and I have to trust Brooke and Ella to put them through their paces and give me the story I know they are capable of writing (The Temptation Series, The Preslocke Series, The Confessions Series, and The South Haven series).
