Synopsis:

Emmie Echavarre is a professional faker. She has to be to survive as one of the few female employees at Nuts & Bolts, a power tool company staffed predominantly by gruff, burly men. From nine to five, Monday through Friday, she’s tough as nails–the complete opposite of her easy-going real self.

One thing she doesn’t have to fake? Her disdain for coworker Tate Rasmussen. Tate has been hostile to her since the day they met. Emmie’s friendly greetings and repeated attempts to get to know him failed to garner anything more than scowls and terse one-word answers. Too bad she can’t stop staring at his Thor-like biceps…

When Emmie and Tate are forced to work together on a charity construction project, things get…heated. Emmie’s beginning to see that beneath Tate’s chiseled exterior lies a soft heart, but it will take more than a few kind words to erase the past and convince her that what they have is real.

Faker is an exceptionally good debut romance from Sarah Smith. The blurb caught my interest and the writing made it a fun enemies to lovers’ story. Emmie works in a predominately male environment as a copywriter for Nuts & Bolts. She has to deal with men all day and one particular coworker whom she can’t seem to get along at all. He seems to be always scowling at her and she returns the scowl right back. Now they are working together on a project and getting in each other’s space. She learns things about him and he’s not the guy she thought he was. What’s his story? Emmie finds out there is more to Tate than the scowl on his face.

It’s easy to understand why Emmie feels like a faker when it comes to being tough at work. She’s been doing it her own life being a different ethnicity and living in a predominately Caucasian area. She was teased and it was easy to become a loner. She shows one side of herself at work and has a softer side for her close friends and family. When she begins to see Tate regularly outside of work, she notices that they are more alike than different. They both are introverts who really don’t express themselves very well. Tate has had a hard time his whole life with expressing himself and it shows. Tate may not be good at expressing himself but he listens and pays attention. He shows you how he feels with his actions instead. Tate is definitely swoon worthy and a favorite hero of mine. Once Emmie sees Tate in a new light, a new relationship blossoms. The author captured the essence of what it is like to be in a new romance and all its nuances which brought back good memories of first love.

It’s a bit of a gamble reading a new author but I have to say Faker was definitely a hit and she’s off to a great start. The story may have been a bit predictable and the conflict blown a little out of proportion, it still hit all the good marks and was an enjoyable read. I look forward to more stories from the gifted author.
