Engaging, sordid and pulled me quickly in to a story that did not slow down. ~ Leigh – Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Synopsis:

McKAY

I wasn’t the one who broke her but I played my part.

She came to us when she was ten. I raised her. I loved her. I taught her how to survive in a world of evil men. But it wasn’t enough.

ADAM

I wasn’t the one who saved her but I did my best.

She needed me as much as I needed her. Bought and paid for on the auction block. But not for the reasons you think. She was my weapon.

DONOVAN

I wasn’t the one who lied to her but I hid her truth. She was broken before I got there. Wild and angry. Defiant and bratty. But she trusted me most. She loved me best.

So I set her free.

Indie Anna Accorsi is a woman lost in her past.

A pretty little nightmare.

A gorgeous piece of misery.

A mess of lovely darkness.

She is creeping beautiful.

And now we want her back.

Well, that was not a romance.

It was engaging, sordid and pulled me quickly in to a story that did not slow down. It was dark and intense. But romance is not quite a word I would use to describe this story. Told in present day and in flashbacks, Creeping Beautiful is the story of Indie Anna Accorsi, a child purchased to fill a role in the mysterious “Company”. At the age of ten, Indie is bought at auction and in a very “La Femme Nikita” manner, trained by her guardians to be an assassin. Indie is loved and protected by the people in her life: Adam, her disciplinarian and father figure; McKay, who showed her care and tended to her needs; Donovan, her therapist who manipulated her mind for her own good; and Nathan, the literal boy next door. But Indie had a past before she came to Adam’s home in the Louisiana bayou, one that even she doesn’t realize is programmed within her mind. Possibly by the Company, that shadowy organization that controls all of their lives. It all comes to a climax on her twentieth birthday.

I have mixed feelings about this story. One the one hand, I loved it. It was interesting and different and filled with twists and turns that made me unable to put it down. On the other….I’m not exactly sure how it ended! Was it a cliff hanger? Was it a “gotcha” ending? Frankly, I don’t know! One thing I did not realize going in was that this story is told in a world that already exists in other books. While I understood probably 90% of the story, I feel like there were some important points that I may have missed, or questions I had that may have been resolved had I been aware of previous plot points. This didn’t stop me from being thoroughly entertained. I’m just a bit bewildered. I can’t hold that against the author though. Her writing did its job of fully engrossing me in its pages.
