I’m a huge fan of the Arizona Vengeance series, but for some reason had not yet read the stories of the Carolina Cold Fury players. With Rafe’s father falling ill and Rafe asking to be traded from Arizona back to the Carolinas, this was the perfect time to be introduced to these players.
Rafe returned home to play for his hometown team hockey team and spend time with his father in his final days. It was bittersweet to watch him and his father navigate past their failings in their relationship and work on enjoying the time they had together to get to know the people they had become. Rafe had plenty of regrets in his past, but they all didn’t involve his father. One of his biggest was Calliope, the girl that got away. Or, more accurately, the one he pushed away when he went to start his career because she deserved more.
Now, I have to say that this is one of those tropes that irks me. The “you deserve more than I can offer” one. But, the rest of the story was so well written that even this excuse for why Rafe left didn’t bother me as much as it could have because the reunion was just so good. These two needed time to become the people they were meant to be before they found one another again, and I really enjoyed Rafe as the more humbled man he became and Poppy as the self assured woman he returned to find. They had enormous chemistry and I found myself rooting for their HEA.
For a shorter book than most of her novels, Rafe still held the same emotional pull as the rest. The hero and heroine were full blooded people, not just brief caricatures with no backstory. It was a sweet and sexy second chance love story, and I truly fell head over heels for both of them.
