LIGHTS, CAMERAS, SUPERSTITIONS?

As the heroine in Kiss and Make Up (a launch book in the brand new category romance Indulgence line from Entangled) is a makeup artist, I thought it would be fun for this St Patrick’s Day blogpost to see if there were any superstitions regarding actors and makeup. And there are!

1. Apparently actors think it’s unlucky to knock over a makeup box. There’s probably nothing more complicated behind this than a fear of getting whatever rubbish is on the floor into the makeup box and from there onto your face. Germs!

2. It’s also unlucky to carry a makeup box. This is because it makes the actor look like an amateur, which therefore means they’re less likely to be taken seriously and offered a contract. Personally I think it’s a good excuse to get someone else to carry your stuff.

3. On opening night, it’s unlucky to use a new set of grease paints for the makeup. Probably nothing more sinister in that than a fear of how new paint will react under the hot lights. Don’t want to end up looking like the Joker!

4. It’s unlucky to clean out a makeup box. They say that’s because it’s sod’s law that if you throw something away, you’re going to need it the night after. I think it’s a good excuse to stay untidy!

5. Lastly, if powder’s dropped on the floor, the actor should dance on it. Why? Your guess is as good as mine! Maybe to ward away evil makeup demons who may come to take all the quality makeup?

So there you have it. Seems like every job has superstitions attached to it!

Do you know of any theatrical superstitions?   Do you know why they say “break a leg” instead of good luck?

Faye is giving away a digital copy of Kiss and Make Up or An Uncommon Sense to one LUCKY commenter. Winner will be selected on 3/15, using random.org.

The Opportunity of a Lifetime…

Makeup artist Tabby Rogers is thrilled to land a job on a New Zealand movie set with lots of perks, including getting her hands on sexy Kiwi stunt man, Eli Black.

The sexual electricity zapping between them can’t be denied, but neither of them is in a position to handle happily-ever-after. Eli’s jetting off to Hollywood, Tabby’s next assignment is in the UK. But there’s nothing wrong with a short-term fling, right?

Except as the sparks burn hotter and responsibilities pull at them from opposite ends of the globe, it quickly becomes clear that something’s gotta give. Must Tabby sacrifice her hard-won career for love? Or will Eli forever be the one that got away?

Faye also writes under the pen name Serenity Woods, her next release will be out April 3, An Uncommon Sense from Samhain.

All six senses tell him she’s the one.

Sensual Healing, Book 1

High school science teacher Grace Fox doesn’t believe in any of that woo-woo stuff. So it’s easy to laugh off her friend’s prediction that she’ll have swear-out-loud sex with the next man who walks through her classroom door.

Who knew that local celebrity Ash Rutherford would have the time to attend his daughter’s parents’ night? Or that the Viking lookalike would trigger an attack of klutziness? He may or may not see dead people, but he certainly got a good look up her skirt.

A doctor turned medium, Ash spends his days communicating with unseen spirits. When it comes to his moody daughter, though, he hopes down-to-earth Grace will give him some insight. The racy lingerie she hides beneath her prim and proper clothing is an added bonus he didn’t expect.

Their attraction is instant and blazing hot, but Ash has been burned before. His ex-wife didn’t believe in his abilities, and no way is he going down that road again. At least not until Grace accepts the possibility there might be life after death. And the ghosts of his past are laid to rest.

Product Warnings
Contains a real live Viking, proof of life after death and sex on a 1970s sheepskin rug, but absolutely no Barry White.

  1. I remember my grandmother and her superstititions: don’t walk under a ladder, don’t step on a crack, rtc. I don’t really believe in them but many people do. Enjoyed your list of actors and makeup. Thanks for the giveaway.

  2. The big theatrical superstition that I think everyone knows is not to use the name of ‘The Scottish Play’ 😀

  3. That was an interesting look at make up superstition. My college drama major roommate seemed to know many superstitions from dress rehearsal all through the closing and drove me insane.

Both books sound really good and I’m glad to be introduced to them.

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  4. One of the superstitions that I remember from my acting days in college was that if you sleep with your script under your pillow you would remember it better. I don’t think I worked. I am sure it was all the practicing we did!
