The Dish for Lucky In Love

Dear Reader,

From the very first moment I put Mysterious Cute Guy on the page, I fell in love. There’s just something about a big, bad, sexy guy that you know nothing about that fires the imagination. But I have to be honest. When he made a cameo in Head Over Heels, (literally a walk-on role only; in fact I believe he only gets a mention or two) I knew nothing about him. Nothing. I never intended to either. He was just one of life’s little (okay big, bad, and sexy) mysteries.

Then my editor called me. Said the first three Lucky Harbor books had done so well that they’d like three more please. And maybe one of the heroes could be Mysterious Cute Guy.

It was fun coming up with a story to go with this enigmatic figure, not to mention a name – Ty Garrison. More fun still to give this ex-Navy SEAL a rough, tortured, bad-boy past and a sweet, giving, good-girl heroine (Mallory Quinn, ER nurse). Oh the fun I had with these two: a bad boy trying to go good, and a good girl looking for a walk on the wild side. Hope you have as much fun reading their story, Lucky In Love.

And then, stick around. Because Mallory’s two Chocoholics-in-crime partners, Amy and Grace, get their own love stories in July and August with At Last and then Forever and a Day.

Lucky In Love excerpt

Lightning sent a jagged bolt across Ty Garrison’s closed lids. Thunder boomed and the earth shuddered, and he jerked straight up in bed, gasping as if he’d just run a marathon.
A dream, just the same goddamn four-year-old dream.
Sweating and trembling like a leaf, he scrubbed his hands over his face. Why couldn’t he dream about something good, like sex with triplets?
Shoving free of the covers, he limped naked to the window and yanked it open. The cool mist of the spring storm brushed his heated skin, and he fought the urge to close his eyes. If he did, he’d be back there.
But the memories came anyway.

“Landing in ten,” the pilot announced as the plane skimmed just beneath the storm raging through the night.
In eight, the plane began to vibrate.
In six, lightning cracked.
And then an explosion, one so violent it nearly blew out his eardrums.

Ty dropped his head back, letting the rain slash at his body through the open window. He could hear the Pacific Ocean pounding the surf below the cliffs. Scented with fragrant pines, the air smelled like Christmas in April, and he forced himself to draw a deep, shaky breath.
He was no longer a SEAL medic, dragging his sorry ass out of a burning plane, choking on the knowledge that he was the only one still breathing, that he hadn’t been able to save a single goddamn person. He was in Washington State, in the small beach town of Lucky Harbor. The ocean was in front of him with the Olympic Mountains at his back.
But hell if at the next bolt of lightning, he didn’t try to jump out of his own skin. Pissed at the weakness, Ty shut the window. He was never inhaling an entire pepperoni pizza before bed again.
Except he knew it wasn’t something as simple as pizza that made him dream badly. It was the edginess that came from being idle and unable to work. His work was still special ops, but he hadn’t gone back to being a first responder trauma paramedic. Instead, he’d gone to work for a private contractor to the government, which was a decent enough adrenaline rush. Plus it suited him – or it had until six months ago when on assignment, he’d had to jump out a second story window to avoid being shot, and had reinjured his leg.
Stretching that leg now, he winced. He wanted to get back to work. Needed to get back. He also needed clearance from his doctor. Pulling on a pair of jeans, he snagged a shirt off the back of a chair and left the room as the storm railed around him. Shrugging into the shirt, he made his way through the big and nearly empty house he’d rented for the duration, heading to the garage. A fast drive in the middle of the night would have to do, and maybe a quick stop at the all-night diner for pie.
But this first.
Flipping on the lights, Ty sucked in a deep, calming breath of motor oil, well-greased tools, and rubber tires. On the left sat a ’72 GMC Jimmy, a rebuild job he’d picked up on the fly. He didn’t need the money. As it turned out, special ops talents were well-compensated these days, but the repair work was a welcome diversion from his problems.
The ’68 Shelby Mustang on the right wasn’t a side job. It was his baby, and she was calling to him. He kicked the mechanic’s creeper from against the wall towards the classic muscle car. Lowering himself onto the cart with a grimace at the pain, Ty rolled beneath the car, shoving down his problems, denying them, avoiding them.
Seeking his own calm in the storm.

    Of course I’m a chocoholic. I learned it from my mother. Dark and white chocolate are my favorite, BUT they have to be good quality chocolates.

    Recently started reading Jill Shalvis books and now I can’t get enough. Great stories.

    I’m a Chocoholic and love it all. Milk and white(I know it’s not looked at as chocolate, but I love it 🙂 are my favorite type of candy bars to eat. But for baking I choose dark first. See, I really love chocolate 🙂

    I only became a chocoholic in my mid 30’s. I’ve always liked chocolate, but I soon started craving it. I normally like any chocolate that has something on the inside. No peanuts though. But yes to peanut butter! It has to be a good chocolate though, no cheap chocolate. My daughter and I are in love with Hershey’s Bliss.

    Chocolate of any kinds, but especially love the dark chocolate. We have a chocolate company about 35 minutes away that makes all kinds of chocolates to die for. Good thing I don’t make a run to town often.

    All I have to say is if you follow Guilty Pleasures on Facebook you will have seen my impulse buy of chocolate today. It is a direct result of finishing LUCK IN LOVE and being half way through the next Lucky Harbor book AT LAST.

    My favorite is Hershey’s Milk Chocolate. Probably the kisses! Sometimes with the caramel. Yummy!!

    Non-recovering Chocoholic here with no plans to change that status. Love dark chocolate best. I will tolerate milk chocolate, but white chocolate is evil.

    Congrats on the extension of the trilogy! I live under a rock (cuz it’s cozy) and I haven’t read the first 3 books, but it’s on my TO DO/TBR list 😉

    I love milk chocolate and white chocolate. Especially white chocolate w/ macadamia nuts… yummmmmmm….

    I am a total chocoholic – dark (like the night…of course) is my favorite and I can be very passionate about dark chocolate covered cherries *whistling while hiding box behind back*. (I’m pretty sure that milky white stuff isn’t really chocolate – just an evil imitator.) I’m so glad that Lucky Harbor has more stories in it! I can’t wait to read the next 3!!! *squee!*

    Did someone say Chocolate? I adore the chocolates I had on the Iberian Peninsula – you can’t seem to get that quality chocolates in the US. Of course, there is always Godiva, but outta my budget. My “go to” chocolate is “Special Dark” I like by chocolate with a bit more cocoa in it.

    I adore Jill’s work. I was fortunate enough to win a copy of Head over Heals and have fell in love with the Lucky Harbor Series.

    A recovering chocoholic… But I still have my moments… I love white chocolate, but my hubby tried to spoil that by telling me it wasn’t REAL chocolate (darn chefs think they know everything!!!) But give me a chocolate cake & I am in heaven…
