To Kink or Not to Kink?
First off, I wanted to thank my hosts here at Guilty Pleasures for having me on the blog. Thanks, guys! I’m thrilled to be here.
On with the blog…
It’s hard to write an erotic romance without kink.
Actually, let me rephrase—it’s hard to write twenty or thirty erotic romances without kink. Believe me, I’ve tried. The reason is I’m a big fan of first-time stories and relatively innocent erotic romance. Stories can sizzle without bullwhips and blindfolds, as far as I’m concerned. However, there comes a time when innocence doesn’t cut it. After all, there are only so many sex acts and after a while, an author just wants to get her freak on, yanno?
So, I’m smack dab in the middle of writing a male-male college series, Men of Holsum College, and after book three I found my stories taking on a decidedly kinkier turn. It began in book 4 with Player and the Prude, and my repressed and dominating film major, Matt.
Matt was kinky, but mostly only in his mind. He wanted to do nasty, slutty, dirty things to Brooks, but spent most of the book dipping his toes into the waters of his sexuality.
In book 5, Bossy and the Brat, Cal and Tyler play games with orgasm denial and cock and ball torture. So…getting up there a little higher in the kink department. And book 6? Well, I don’t want to ruin it for anyone, but I will tell you that some extremely naughty things happen in the back of a limousine.
Still—I don’t want Holsum College to turn into a BDSM series. No, no, no! Holsum College is about sweetness, innocence and light!
Innocence and light!!!!!
Perhaps the biggest reason I can’t cross over into full-out kink is that, like most things I write, Holsum College is at its heart romantic comedy. And if there’s one thing I know about BDSM, it’s that it’s not all that sexy when you sprinkle in jokes.
So until I figure out how to write dark and gothic, my forays into kink are going to have to remain forays. I’ll leave the heavy-duty stuff to the professionals.
What do you think? Does erotic romance need kink to be sexy? Or can it be hot while staying on the vanilla side? Which kind of story do you prefer?
Comment for a chance to win a copy of my upcoming release, Bossy and the Brat, which comes out July 28th from Siren-Bookstrand.

Bossy and the Brat Excerpt (Adult):
“But, I need you not to be with anyone else.” That much, Cal knew. He couldn’t think of Tyler as his—with sex or without—if Tyler was still hooking up with other guys.
“Um…yeah, I guess that’s okay.”
“If you don’t want to—”
“No.” Tyler pulled Cal’s hand protectively into the cradle of his own. “No, I want to. Just…we’ll be making out and stuff, right?” He rubbed his hands on his thighs, fidgeting in his seat as if he was hard all over again.
Cal bit his lip. He wasn’t much older than Tyler, but he felt like his sexual control was already miles ahead. If nothing else, he’d been raised with the idea that restraint was a cornerstone of life. That a man couldn’t be a man without it. But looking at Tyler with his low-slung jeans and his provocative haircut, Cal realized—Tyler didn’t understand about delayed gratification.
“No. We won’t be making out. Or stuff.” He watched, peeking to the seat next to him as he drove, gauging Tyler’s reaction. If Ty had slumped in disgust, Cal would have backed down in a minute. Tyler was too much of a temptation to avoid for long.
But Tyler didn’t lose interest. Instead, he wiggled in his seat, those fitful hands scrubbing all the more mercilessly on his thighs. “Aw, man,” he whined. But there was a hint of a smile on his lips. “I can’t wait that long.”
Oh, God. Cal felt his own cock filling. Just the idea of Tyler hot and hard and waiting for him made Cal crazy. But, used to containing his desires deep inside where no one could touch them, he let that warmth fill his belly. He absorbed Tyler’s attraction, drinking it like liquor. It made him so giddy he felt light-headed. “Yes, you can.” Cal touched Tyler’s thigh, feeling the jump of muscles underneath.
He squeezed, measuring the resistance. “You’ll wait all the way until September.”
“No.” Tyler shook his head, his eyes wide with something like fear. But it wasn’t just that—his gaze was bright and shining. Excited. “I can still jerk off, right?”
Cal rounded onto the street by the dorms and thought about it. He wasn’t in any position to tell Ty what to do. But he was having such fun watching Ty squirm. “How about this—you wait until I tell you it’s okay?”
Tyler licked his lips. He settled back into his seat. Cal wondered if Tyler noticed that he was cuffing Cal’s thumb and rubbing up and down. “Um…I guess. But how long?”
“I guess we’ll see.” Cal tried to sound disinterested as he pulled to a stop. He knew he wouldn’t be able to park anywhere near Cushman I, II and III, but he didn’t want Tyler to come for the ride as he wove in and out of neighborhood streets. “If you’re good, I’ll let you get off sooner.” He smiled at the indignant look on Tyler’s face. He wasn’t sure anyone had ever told Tyler “no.”
“What if I just go ahead and do it when I feel like it?” Tyler’s pointed chin jutted forward. It was the picture of rebellious indifference. But Tyler gave himself away with his searching eyes. He wanted this.
“Well, then I’ll be disappointed.” Cal watched the emotion play across Ty’s face.
Ty swallowed, but then looked away as if he was unhappy. So Cal added, “And I’ll have to punish you.”
“Hm?” Ty twisted his mouth into a small grin. Clearly, that was what he’d been wanting Cal to say. “And how would you do that?”
In that respect, Cal had no idea. He felt like he’d reached the end of his creativity. He’d played the stern master but had no idea what lovers did for punishment. He thought back to the few beatings he’d gotten as a kid. There was nothing sensual there. And though he knew full well that sadomasochism was a popular kink, even among students, he didn’t think he could ever be interested in hurting someone for pleasure. Not even if the receiver enjoyed it.
“I’ll have to think about that.” Cal gave his best answer. Mostly, he just wanted Ty thinking of him—whether he touched himself or not. Because Cal knew he’d be thinking of Ty with every waking breath. “But I promise you, it will be severe.”
Okay, now he was really pushing it, as Cal had no idea what he’d use to back up his threat. But the way Tyler batted his eyes and tilted his head was all the encouragement Cal needed. His fingers twitched, wanting to reach across and grab Tyler’s neck to drag him in for a kiss. But they were on campus, in the jagged line that delineated where they could be together and where they couldn’t. So Cal scorched him with his eyes, since he couldn’t with his lips. “You won’t touch yourself tonight, will you?”
Slowly, Ty shook his head. His eyes were wide and transfixed, his mouth slack and wet. Cal saw a hint of his semen on Ty’s chin from their blowjob earlier and it made his cock pulse.
“No, I promise.”

Bossy and the Brat blurb:
Calvin Beaumont is supposed to marry Nicole. He’s a biology major, lab tech, and Resident Advisor—everything everyone expects him to be. There’s only one problem. He likes boys. In particular, a flirty, dance major who was a freshman on his hall.
It’s sizzling summer at Holsum College, and Tyler Burk isn’t a freshman anymore. When he notices his hardworking Resident Advisor has same-sex feelings, he goads, teases, and tempts Mr. Bossy into dating on the sly. Cal may not be out, but he’s domineeringly hot, and Tyler doesn’t mind keeping things quiet…for a while.
But Calvin has wanted Tyler all year, and their sexting and secret rendezvous soon blossom into something neither one of them can control. Can Cal control his secret, as well as his sexy little brat? Or will he be man enough to admit he’s not the man everyone thought he was?

I think vanilla can be sexy as long as it is written well and keeps me entertained. That being said I do read lots of kink. I read the sweet stuff and the hardcore stuff. I personally like it all
I like a fairly wide range of heat levels, though I’m not as into BDSM as I used to be. Not sure why it changed. Maybe I got overloaded. 🙂
#BDSMoverload
This book sounds really good. Now I have to go buy what is already available in the series!
I, for one, don’t care to read hardcore BDSM books. They’re just not my thing. I like innocence and sweetness along with the sexy side
Hiya, Bridgett!
The first three books are available on Amazon, and the fourth is out on Bookstrand right now. (Will be on Amazon in 3-4 weeks.)
Happy reading and good luck with the giveaway!

I love reading kink but I don’t think it has to be in EVERY erotic book. I believe it should fit the story. Thanks for the post…very entertaining. Your series looks so hot. I’d love to read it.
Thanks for commenting, Kimber! I used to try and fit kink into every story. But over time I’ve realized that I’ve just got to go where my characters want me to go. Writing takes longer that way, but it’s worth it.
Cheers,
D
No I think you don’t think you have to have kink in erotic romance. If a writer is good he/she can make a sex scene quite erotic without it. but then again on the flip side a little kink can’t hurt. LOL
Hi Eileen,
Lately I’ve been really enjoying writing very erotic masturbation and hand job scenes. It can be really fun to focus in on something quiet and simple and really get into the emotions of the moment.
But, yeah, kink is fun, too! 🙂
I don’t think you need to have kink to have a good sex scene. There is nothing wrong if you don’t have it in the story. I don’t care for hardcore BDSM stories and I would rather read stories with sweetness & innocence, with angst tossed in.
Due to Fifty Shades, it seems to me that erotic romance books are too focused on having BSDM & kink thrown in the story. Some stories seem to be more sex scenes than story.
I like a book that has just the right amount of sweet and kink. Not really into the full BDsM books because they tend to be more rough and less romantic, so not my fave. I have found the Holsum College series to be the right mix…especially Matt’s kinkier side in Player and the Prude! Can’t wait to see what Daisy has in store for us in the next books!! Totally addicted to the series!!
I like a little kinky romance, but I’m not into hardcore BDSM in my erotic reading. I think this book hints at being a perfect balance of both. I’m so excited for this book, because I love story lines where there’s a forbidden element as there seems to be for Cal in his sexual preferences. I think it’s very realistic for people this young to still hold on to those ideals of who they want to be and where they think their life adventure should end up. I’m looking forward to seeing how Tyler can help Cal cope with seeing some of his illusions shattered.
What attracted me to Holsum College is all the things you mentioned earlier, you know, the innocence and light. 😉 I like to read these stories about guys finding their way and the struggles they have and how they face them. Watching them fall in love is a kind of warm happiness that you don’t always get from other hardcore m/m romance. Thanks for some great stories & lovable characters!
BTW, HOT COVER. 😉
this is a well thought out series plot plan. Impressive! Enjoyed your blog post very much.
Not into hardcore either, don’t mind a little kink but don’t find it necessary all the time.
Kink does hold my attention, but I find it works best with a light hand. If it’s nonstop or overwrought, I start thinking about the logistics of the act and less about the sensuality of it, or the chemistry between the partners.
Just wanted to say that I love this series, and I’m very excited for the next Holsum College book! Thanks for writing such great stories, Daisy! 🙂
The book sounds great I am into kink. If I get overload, I’ll switch to a nice no kink HEA. Your book is a definite buy.
I, too, love to read it all. Unfortunately, all of it is lacking in my real life, the sweet and the kink. Everything I read these days is fodder for dreams and fantasies. It sounds like you are doing just fine writing what you feel at the time. Who could (or should) ask for more? Your books are all on my TBR list. I just have to find the money to get to it all. It’s a worthy goal!
Great post…thanks for sharing!
Thanks for all the comments, guys! Good luck on the contest to everyone!
Daisy
You know I think it can go both ways. Sometimes I enjoy some kink in erotic books other times erotica is just that, no special tools required.
Thank you for a great contest!!

Sex in a story can be very sexy and still be “vanilla”. Sure, BDSM or kink can be sexy but it can also be uncomfortable. It is up the the skill and style of the author. jepebATverizonDOTnet
I love both vanilla and kink books!! But I do like a little sprinkle of kink is good. Because a lot of peeps do sprinkle a little kink in their real sex lives. 🙂 .. I am adding these books to my TBR! They sound great!
Vanilla can be fun and sexy, so long as you mix it up. A little kink now and then wouldn’t hurt either. Spice always makes things better 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway, can’t wait to read Bossy and the Brat!!
