The Music of Inside Bet

By Katie Porter

I’ll tell you a secret: Inside Bet [http://katieporterbooks.com/books/vegas-top-guns/inside-bet/] started with one song. One little video on YouTube that I (Lorelie) tweeted at Carrie. Joseph Gordon Levitt singing Bad Romance:

Naturally there were other steps and things to work out and characters to build. But there was something about that video that sparked ideas. Mostly? JGL was yummy in it. (I know there are plenty who won’t agree, but that’s okay. More JGL for me to keep for myself.)

But music is very important to the Katie Porter process. Sometimes it feeds directly into scenes. At one point, Captain Jon Carlisle does karaoke. Yeah, fighter pilot and playboy from an old-money family sing karaoke. More than that, he’s good at it (of course). The song picked for him by his fellow pilots is INXS’ Need You Tonight:

Yeah. He pulls it off. Because Jon is that kind of slick—but what Heather really loves is when his slick front starts to fall away and his sincerity slips through.

I also played Everybody Loves Me by OneRepublic practically on repeat while writing Inside Bet. Since I couldn’t find an official video, I chose this fan vid using clips of Damon Salvatore from the Vampire Diaries. Damon has nothing in the world to do with Inside Bet, except that he’s a cutie and I have a shameful kind of love for the Vampire Diaries. (It’s one of those shows I love to hate.)

There was something about this book that really called to the music lover in me. (The pop music lover. I never said I was very indie.) In fact, Mr. Brightside by The Killers is even mentioned in particular, something I hardly ever do while writing. Usually it seems better to give a hint to the music rather than say it outright. Paint with broad strokes, you know? (Mostly so I don’t mention the one song a reader can’t freaking stand because it played for a million and one times. I’m considerate like that.) But Mr. Brightside had to be mentioned. It was just right for Jon and Heather as they cruised along in Jon’s fancy, convertible Aston Martin:

There’s more, of coure. My play list was way longer than four songs and it played non-stop while we wrote the fabulous Vegas story of a fighter pilot and an accountant who discover they have way more in common than they thought. But I think the good people at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews would get a little annoyed at a never-ending post.

Up next for Katie Porter, the co-writing team of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown:

Now that both RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Picks DOUBLE DOWN [ http://katieporterbooks.com/books/vegas-top-guns/double-down/] and INSIDE BET have been released, we’re looking forward to the September 25th arrival of HOLD ‘EM [http://katieporterbooks.com/books/vegas-top-guns/hold-em/], featuring wild child Leah and a surprising reunion with a fellow pilot. The final two installments of the “Vegas Top Guns” [http://katieporterbooks.com/books/vegas-top-guns/] series will follow in 2013.

November brings the m/m Christmas-themed CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR [http://katieporterbooks.com/books/came-upon-a-midnight-clear/], and in January, LEAD AND FOLLOW [http://katieporterbooks.com/books/club-devant/lead-and-follow/] will launch the five-part “Club Devant” series of erotic multi-partner romances set in a hot New York City burlesque club.

INSIDE BET Description:
Zero to kinky in 3…2…1

As assistant director in an accounting firm, Heather Morris is at the top of her game. Her straight-laced colleagues wouldn’t believe the secrets she hides: her wild teenage past, work-of-art tattoo and nipple ring.

Her orderly life veers off course when she’s approached at a wine tasting by an arrogant pretty boy with a dirty mind and a hardcore dangerous profession. She finds herself tempted to step outside her respectable façade for some well-deserved excitement.

Captain Jon “Tin Tin” Carlisle knows women. Loves women. One glimpse of the nipple ring under Heather’s conservative blazer lights up all his instincts. He’s stumbled upon a rare treasure: an exotic beauty with a sexy laugh and a taste for dares.

After a red-hot hour of roulette, their simmering attraction bursts into an exploration of mutual passion that tests even Jon’s erotic limits. Soon he craves something he’s never desired before. More. But for Heather, more means trusting, and trusting leads to trouble.

Now Jon must decide if the best sex of his life is worth chancing his heart on a woman who shields hers so well.

Warning: Contains hot power play featuring a fighter pilot who comes from old money but knows all about bringing the dirty. Also: a nipple ring, sex on the hood of a hella sweet sportscar, and one teensy, tiny, wickedly naughty fluid exchange.

I am totally in agreement about JGL- Saw him Premium Rush this weekend, and he sure looks slick on a bike. :o)

My favorite new song is Some Nights by Fun. I was just looking up these books on Goodreads yesterday! Excited to read them.

    • Argh!! I haven’t seen Premium Rush yet! And LAWLESS and WORDS are out now too. It’s favorite man overload: JGL, Hardy, Cooper. If Michael Fassbender had a movie out this week, I’d just explode. And whoa, I cannot wait to see Looper. Rawk!

Just finished DOUBLE DOWN and loved it!!!! Have to say in the last 17 years of my husband being in the Air Force I have not meet pilots that hot! Lol! We were defiantly at the wrong bases!! Still have time tho, hehe:) Love the song by AWOLNATION called SAIL, awesome song my husband calls it a “stripper” song? Can’t wait to read INSIDE BET!! shannonowens92@yahoo.com

    • That’s fantastic, Shannon! I’m really glad you’re on board with the series, and that it pushed some happy (if perhaps slightly unrealistic) buttons for you. But that’s the beauty of romance, no? Happy reading!

Congrats on the new release. This book sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to read it. I put Inside Bet on my wishlist. I agree with Shannon- I really like SAIL by AWOLNATION but my favorite new song, at least new to me, is I won’t Let You Go by James Morrison.

After having a Smash marathon over the weekend, my favorite new song is Run by Katharine McPhee.

    • I *love* SMASH. Lorelie has taken to calling Derek “Epic Hair,” because really, his hair is amazing. And McPhee’s version of “Run” stomps all over Snow Patrol’s. *g*

I’m not sure it’s a new song but I’m currently jamming to Everybody Talks by Neon Trees. The pop radio station I listen to in the pool plays some songs too much but I wish they’d play this song more! Thanks for the contest.

My latest favorite song is Whistle by Flo Rida, I just can’t stop playing it. By the way ladies, awesome job on this series. I am so loving this group!!

I love when music is shared – I love playlists 🙂 Right now, my favorite song is Little Big Town’s “Pontoon.” It makes me wanna go out on the water! And I am enjoying many of the others mentioned in these comments.

Sad to say, but I don’t really have a favorite new song. i don’t get that many opportunities to listen to the radio. But I have to say – i was in high school in the early 80″s (yep, that’s dating myself!), and I remember INXS’s Need You Tonight very well – we danced to it at the clubs a lot!

I love Katy Perry’s Wide Awake! She has such a nice voice and I enjoy her singing. Though this song’s video is different.

  11. Thanks so much to everyone who’s stopped by. If I haven’t replied to you directly, it’s because I’m too busy writing down song recommendations. I’m such a hermit that Lorelie sends me new songs, or I wait for them to show up on So You Think You Can Dance *g*

    Happy reading!

  12. Thank you all for stopping by!!!

I have many favorite songs, but I do love Blown Away by CU also =)

Thank you Katie for a great post!
