Adrenaline Junkies Go Rock Climbing

By Katie Porter

In Hold ’Em [http://katieporterbooks.com/books/vegas-top-guns/hold-em/] both Leah and Michael are adrenaline junkies. They drive motorcycles, fly planes and are thrill seekers in practically every sense one can think of—including in the bedroom. Of course when it comes to the sexy times, they get their thrills from opposite ends of the spectrum. Mike enjoys experiencing extreme sensation and Leah absolutely adores being in control.

Except that a couple can’t spend an entire book in bed. (Well, we haven’t managed it yet. It might be fun to try though!) So what do two super high strung adrenaline junkies do in their time off?

They go rock climbing, of course.

Michael has a little bit more experience when it comes to rock climbing, but Leah is the type of chick who launches full bore into experiences she likes. When Michael makes plans for them to go to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (and omg is that a mouthful of a name!) Leah is totally into the idea. Well, once she finds out exactly where they’re going, that is. She’s not big on surprises and she’s really not big on not knowing where she’s going.

But why wouldn’t she love Red Rock?

Now imagine being an adrenaline junky with a dash of control issues looking up at that hunk of rock. No, that’s not a rock, not to Leah. That’s a challenge waiting to be conquered.

As if that weren’t enough, once they’ve conquered the rock, Leah’s reward is a bit of intimate time with Michael:

Michael crested the top where she sat at the edge of a cliff. They’d intentionally left this route for last. It rated only a 5.7, but the view was amazing. After unstrapping his harness, he eased onto the sand beside her. Their toes dangled over the thirty-foot drop.

Leah didn’t say anything, not for a long time. The peace was utterly beautiful.

Miles of long terrain stretched out. Golds and reds, covered with the slightest brushes of dark sage. The dipping sun extended the reds into the sky and added royal purple. The blue at their backs disappeared, and even the air held the crisp promise of the oncoming night. Far away was the magnetic glow of Vegas, but they ignored it in favor of the sunset.

She breathed. Deeply.

The only thing better than the clean smell of juniper and creosote was Michael. His sun-warmed vitality eased her more deeply into the moment.

So see? Completely and absolutely worth Leah’s risking life and limb to get to the top of the cliff. Well. It’s not like the girl knows how to avoid a challenge anyway. Particularly not when it involves delicious, tempting Captain Michael Templeton.

Thanks for the great post and giveaway! I’ve had these books on my want list for a while now 🙂 Ummm… I jumped off a cliff once 🙂 But I was all properly harnessed and helmeted of course.

The most risky thing I ever did was climbing Mt. Vesuvius in Italy with a group of friends. I’m afraid of heights.
This book sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to read it.

I have love, loved reading this series and reviewing the last two. I call them the dynamic duo because they amaze me!

I’m not a climber, I love hiking and have hiked up some steep trail but I don’t think I could ever climb rocks. I’m too afraid of falling!

    • Thanks so much! Your reviews have been in-box treasures 🙂

Dynamic Duo, eh? Does that mean I can think fondly on the new Dark Knight movie? No spoilers, of course. But… yes, I’ll stay there for a minute.

  4. Laurie

I can’t wait to read these! I think it would be some of the trails/walking on edges of cliffs, I hiked in Yosemite with my brother, I look back and think why did I let him talk me into doing that.

  5. DANIELA

Risky? Well, the only thing that comes to mind is driving really fast, around 200 km/h (once I it was 215 km/h).
    You thin that counts?

Hmm, I’d say speeding. And I don’t mean 10 mph over. I wanted to see what it felt like to do 100. So I did. That was in my 1986 Toyota Corolla. Later tried it in my 1991 Camry and comfortable got it to 110. Now I have Honda Accords so they do 120 nicely. Of course, I only do this when there is very little if any other cars around. I mean, they make the engines capable, it’s such a shame not to put it to use.

I don’t really tend to do things that are risky. For most of my adult life, I have had to take blood thinners due to clotting issues (first at age 20), so I have to be careful because I could either develop clots or have internal bleeding/difficulty stopping bleeding from an injury. Add to that, a few years back I fell on ice and hurt my back/hip very bad. Basically, I am just a mess, lol.

The most risky thing? *hmmm* Might be getting on the bus for an hours drive to meet the man i´ve talked to online and on phone, to meet him in person *shudders* not sure i´d take that risk again. =D but it worked out, and we´ve been together for 10 years, now.

    Love the giveaway,
    //Linda

  9. Angie M

I’m not a big risk taker but the summer I was 20 my boyfriend and I were in Paris, France and when we left the bar we were at the Metro was closed. So we walked many blocks back to our hotel, not knowing where we were going! He must have had a better sense of direction than me because I still have no idea how we made it back to the hotel!

  10. I once spent an enchanted afternoon sitting on a cliff looking out over the ocean just north of Vancouver. I wouldn’t call it rock climbing but it was a bit of a hike to get there.

  11. Thanks to everyone for stopping by! Some of y’all are nuts! (In the best sense, of course.) I’ll refrain from talking about my risky behavior, because I’m a perfect angel and don’t want to blemish my reputation *sweet face*

And if Lorelie stops by to read this, she’ll laugh her butt off.

  12. Annette

I’ve never been much of a risk taker. Climbing at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, going up in the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the log flume at Six Flags. I do like to drive fast. though.

  13. Thank you all for stopping by! To the dynamic duo that is Katie Porter, thank you so much for coming to play with us at GP =)

Congrats to Daniela you are the winner of this contest!
