Cowboy Cop is the first in a mini-series published by Harlequin Intrigue, written by Rita Herron. Not only is Ms. Herron a new to me author, but this is the first time I’ve read from this keep you on the edge of your seat suspense category by Harlequin. The Bucking Bronc Lodge series will feature stories where law enforcement /ranchers mentor to troubled children through camping, horseback riding, and various other outside activities with mystery and murder thrown into the mix. I always enjoy a good suspense and this one fit the bill.
Miles is one of those super sexy, intense guys who’s married to his job. He spends his days and nights catching the bad guys, but when he helps put behind bars a serial killer they’ve been chasing he thinks he’ll finally have time to spend with his son Timmy. Then tragedy strikes home and Timmy’s mother is killed with Timmy in the house. Is it a coincidence that the serial killer was just released from jail on an evidence technicality? Now Miles needs to find Marie’s killer but also needs to be there for his son who no longer speaks. Will Timmy ever recover from what he’s witnessed? Miles agrees to bring him to the Bucking Bronc Lodge to see if anyone is capable of helping his son. Miles meets the woman that is assigned to Timmy and though he is immediately attracted to her he pushes those feelings aside to find the killer, help keep everyone safe, and deal with Timmy not responding to anyone or anything at the ranch.
Our strong heroine of the story, Jordan, lives on the ranch as a counselor and because of tragedy in her own life, has made it her mission to help as many kids that come through the ranch as possible. But when Miles and Timmy arrive her emotions are torn. Jordan is attracted to Miles and feels there is definitely a spark between them, but she has a difficult job to do, and no matter what Miles is doing to her insides, she must stay focused on helping his son remember the night his mother was killed so he is able to heal and move on.
I really liked both of these characters. They are driven, determined, and focused and do not let their attraction for each other get in the way of what they are trying to accomplish. The romance takes a back seat to the thrills, action, and suspense although it is apparent they have sexual chemistry.
After the instilled terror, shootings, kidnappings, car chases, hostage situations and murders, this is an emotional story of guilt and healing. Even though we know the killer there are still twists woven into the plot that keep you guessing. The plot unfolded nicely and it never felt rushed which I’ve noticed with some suspense novels. I plan on reading the next two stories in this miniseries which release in January and February. I would also read other stories by this seasoned author.
Enjoy Everyone!
