Inspiration Strikes

Hi there, Guilty Pleasure readers! I’m Macy Beckett, here to discuss the inspiration behind my hot and humorous small-town Sultry Springs series—where first loves find second chances.

So where do I draw my inspiration? Like most authors, it comes from real life!

I was an “Air Force Brat,” so I never stayed in one place for long. I was born in Washington DC, then went on to live in Arizona, North Carolina, Illinois, New Hampshire, Nebraska, Florida, Germany, Texas, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. (I feel like I’m forgetting a couple states…but can you blame me?) After graduating from college at Texas State University—go bobcats!—I continued to lead a nomadic lifestyle, usually gravitating toward small towns.

And I mean *small* towns. The kind that make Sultry Springs look like a teeming metropolis.

Additionally, all of these tiny towns—Red Rock, Deep Run, Pink Hill, Christiansburg—were located in the south. When sitting down to write the first Sultry Springs book, I didn’t need to research the taste of grits. I’d eaten them a dozen different ways. (In some parts of Texas, folks eat their grits with butter and SUGAR. Can you believe that blasphemy? Everyone knows grits are best prepared with butter, salt, and a heap of shredded cheddar.)

Bouncing from one tiny town to the next filled me with varied experiences that leak out into my fiction. All of my series—I have three of them in the works!—are set in small-to-medium sized towns, likely because I’ve never lived in the heart of an urban setting. Big cities are alien to me, so I tend not to write them. Maybe one of these days…

Okay, readers. Now that I’ve shared the inspiration behind my quirky little town, I have a SUPER IMPORTANT question for you:

How do you like your grits?

  1. What the hell is a grit?
  2. With butter and salt, (maybe a little cheese), the way nature intended.
  3. Other, (explain below), because I’m a rebel like that.

A SHOT OF SULTRY BY MACY BECKETT – IN STORES MARCH 2013

Welcome to Sultry Springs, Texas: where home can be the perfect place for a fresh start.

For West Coast filmmaker Bobbi Gallagher, going back to Sultry Springs is a last resort. But with her career in tatters, a quick trip to her hometown might get her the footage she needs to salvage her reputation. She just can’t let anything distract her again. Not even the gorgeous contractor her brother asked to watch over her. As if she can’t handle filming a few rowdy Texans.

Golden boy Trey Lewis, with his blond hair and Technicolor-blue eyes, is a leading man if Bobbi ever saw one. He’s strong and confident and–much to her delight–usually shirtless. He thinks keeping his best friend’s baby sister out of trouble will be easy. But he has no idea of the trouble in store for him…

I had never even heard of grits untill moving to Florida in the late 60’s with my family. I have tried them several times over the years and have come to the conclusion that I like them best…… on someone else’s plate. ;o)

I have not had grits yet. I moved to Austin, TX from Minnesota this summer and just recently told my sister I wanted to try them. I think that I would like them with butter or cream and some cheese.

  5. With butter! I love my grits with butter mmmm I think I still have some around actually eheh. I never put cheese in them, going to have to try it.

I do not like grits. I think they are like gefilte fish — an acquired taste. You kind of have to be raised on them to appreciate them. Otherwise….not so much! Actually, one of the fun food things I like is to order foods in restaurants that I’ve read about in books but never actually eaten. That is a wonderful way to try new things and it has lead me to many delicious meals!

I’ve only had grits once or twice, I’m not a big fan but I’ve only eaten them plain with some butter and sugar. I’m sure if I tried a different dish with grits I may enjoy them better.
    Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

I had grits once many years ago with bacon and cheese when I was a young girl. But moving back East I haven’t had them since.

I like my grits with sugar on them. I don’t understand salt, pepper or cheese on them but that might be because I’m a Northerner. Lol

Same as you; butter, salt and heaps of cheese. With a bit more cheese! Plus, maybe some cheese. I prefer real butter. NO margarine. No fake stuff. Salt has to be good too. Sometimes I switch it up on the cheese; my SO likes gorgonzola or blue cheese.

Well, apparently I am in the “what the heck are grits” category – they don’t sound very appetizing but hey, what do I know – I’m stuck up here in northeast Pennsylvania. We know pizza and cheesteaks ~ LOL!
