Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone.

Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.

Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing.

From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance.

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

Deacon is an intriguing book full of emotion, heartbreak, smoking hot sex, forgiveness, humor, sass, and passionate true love. It’s a definite must read if you like hot badass men and strong women who have the ability to not only stand up for their men, but stand up to them as well.

It’s very rare when I read a book I like both main characters equally. Usually for me, one overtakes the story and pulls the other along. That is not the case here. Deacon and Cassie share this story page for page. Their story is not all about romance and fairytales, they don’t have a relationship that instantly takes off upon meeting each other, and in fact at times it gets pretty ugly. However, sometimes you have to venture through the ugly to know what beauty is and understand what you can’t live without. They share their journey down a haunted road full of past regrets and ghosts and prove that true love is worth fighting for.

As typical with any Kristen Ashley male lead, Deacon is the whole package. He’s brutally honest at times, a total alpha, complete with toughness and very straightforward dialog. He can be bossy and he is never afraid to speak his mind. He also isn’t immune to making mistakes. Watching him fight for redemption and not only work through his past, but work towards his future with Cassie is heart wrenching and heartwarming at the same time. This book really pulls out a lot feeling from the readers. The writing is so descriptive and beautiful you feel as though you’re intruding in their lives as you read.

Cassie really stole my heart in this book. She is an extremely driven strong lady who is just trying to love the only part of the man he will share with her. She knows his life is full of secrets, she knows he isn’t willing to tell her anything about his past, and she loves what little part of him he will give her. That is until his past is staring her in the face and she has no choice but to react.
Once the past meets the present, Deacon has the fight of his life on his hands as he learns what he wants and what he needs. He knows he can’t live without Cassie, but he also knows he can’t hide the darkness he’s lived through any longer. He not only has to release his demons, he has to find a way to salvage his future.

I recommend you have some uninterrupted time on your hands before picking up this book because I promise you won’t want to put it down. It’s fast-paced, highly emotional, and loaded with sexy.
