Stepping into the world of Madame X is like stepping into a surreal parallel universe of power, wealth, secrets and control.
Madame X is an enigma. She is beautiful and cultured. Her services are retained by the giants of industry to train their wayward sons to become powerful men in society, Masters of the Universe in the boardroom. She is a force to be reckoned with for these men. But there is one man that holds all of the control over mind and body where she is concerned. And as Madame X says, there are giants and there are titans.
Caleb is most certainly a titan.
Caleb Indigo is wealthy and powerful, but beyond that we know very little about him. He is a puzzle and, frankly, while I don’t detest him, I’m not sure I like him at all. My feelings for him are at odds. But I have to believe that is by design and not simply my opinion of him after reading the story. I believe that’s the impression that the author wanted the reader to have of this man so we can sympathize with Madame X and understand her relationship with him. Caleb is this handsome and powerfully foreboding figure that is omniscient and constantly watching Madame X, binding her to him with a Svengali-like hold.
The thought of leaving Caleb or questioning her life had not occurred to Madame X until she meets Logan Ryder. The electricity between these two is palpable and Logan sparks a need in Madame X to have more than the life she currently lives.
But as much as Madame X may want to escape Caleb, he is what she knows and the fear of leaving that behind is terrifying to her.
When the book started, I had so many questions about Madame X. Who was she really? Who was Caleb? Is Logan really all he says he is? And I find that in the end, I am left with more questions and convoluted feelings than I had from the start.
While Madame X is not a dark novel, it is not light by any stretch of the imagination either. It is a strange, gray world where I’m not sure everything is as it seems, but as the reader, I just haven’t been given enough information yet. It is difficult to give a full review without disclosing anything that is best discovered at the appropriate time when reading the story, but it is darkly addictive and strangely erotic, and I look forward to seeing where the author takes this story in the next installment.
