I was a bit surprised when Hard Rules didn’t drag me right into the story and hold me under. But, as usual, in the end, I couldn’t put it down and was a little upset with the way it ended.
Shane Brandon is one strong, sexy, man. No room for a permanent woman in his life when he is trying to make the family business legitimate and take it over. Emily could cause some major problems for him and he has to figure out just how much he wants to let her into his life and that of the Brandon Empire. He may have no choice to keep her close since she is as stubborn as he is … a very well-suited match. Both in the office and in the bedroom.
Emily has secrets that she needs to keep hidden. What are they? I have no idea … I just know that it has something to do with Keith. Who’s Keith? I have no idea. Yes, Emily is the mystery here. She’s in hiding and has now become embroiled in all the Brandon Family drama. Of course, she could have walked away. She was given enough chances and enough orders to do so. She may be running from someone or something but she can’t run from Shane. He’s a draw to her … she’s become addicted to him and will do whatever it takes to help him bring down his brother.
The supporting cast of characters lend so much to this story. Seth is extremely intriguing. But, then again, she has a way of writing wonderful undercover agents. Jessica is one strong and loyal woman. Derek … well we have to have at least one character that you will love to hate. Brandon Sr. is an enigma an I am really not sure what side he will fall on. He’s also an extremely poor example of a father. And, finally Maggie. The mother. She hasn’t showed her true colors yet. Possibly playing both sides of the fence so that she ends up on the right side. And, what an example she is setting for her boys!
What I had to remember was that this is the beginning of the Dirty Money Series. This book is setting up the characters, the background. Truthfully, I read the prologue and thought that I knew who Emily was when she showed up and then got a rude awakening. Did that surprise me? No. It’s Lisa Renee Jones and I should have known that all is not what it seems to be. That’s what she does best … keeps you guessing and keeps you on your toes. She never did and probably never will write an ordinary love story. Is this different from her other series? Yes and no. But, it’s interesting and mysterious … it’s sexy and sinful. She, again, writes a scene that will have you going back to read it over and over … a balcony, this time, that will have you wishing you could see the Denver Skyline.
