I was naive in the culture and dance hierarchy but was intrigued and captivated by Natalie, Ana and the world of Ballet. ~ Paige, Guilty Pleasures
Description:
Anastasia Mikhelson is the rising star of the New York City Ballet. She’s sacrificed creature comforts, a social life, as well as her own physical well-being for perfection in dance. Even her reputation as The Ice Queen doesn’t faze her. Though Ana’s at the peak of her career, competition from a new and noteworthy dancer puts all she’s worked for in jeopardy.
While Natalie Frederico has shown herself to be a prodigy when it comes to ballet, she much prefers modern dance and living on her own terms. Life is too short for anything else. However, when the opportunity to dance with the New York City Ballet is thrust upon her, it’s not like she could say no. Dealing with the company’s uptight lead is another story, however. When the two are forced to work side-by-side, sparks begin to fly onstage and off.
I had a tendency to stay away from F/F but was pleasantly surprised by First Position. The story was well written and drew me immediately.
Ana and Natalie aren’t exactly enemies but they aren’t friends either. Opposites are a better description. Ana the consummate professional and prima ballerina. Natalie the free spirit, modern dancer with a but of traditionalism. Despite being opposites, they worked on bringing out the best in one another.
I loved reading how each grew into a leader position who helped and supported the other.
The secondary characters, including Ana’s father, were also well written and helped tell the story. They added to the drama without over complicating the tale.
The last chapters of the book surprised me. It wasn’t the predictable storyline that it could have been. I felt the loss and sadness in Ana and Natalie’s relationship as well as the joy and happiness when they finally reconnected.
