I loved every bit of this story and I thoroughly appreciated the grand gesture ending; Working Back was my first book by BJ Harvey but it won’t be my last! ~ Slick – Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Synopsis:

Girls weren’t on Bryant Cook’s radar until the day he moved next door to the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. Fortunately for him, Faith Baker fell just as hard that first day as well.
From ages eight to twenty-two, it was the ‘Faith and Bryant’ show, and their happily forever after seemed certain. Until it wasn’t.
Now she’s back after twelve years and she wants what they had.
That’s when Bryant issues a challenge. One Faith can’t resist. After all, her future—their future—is riding on it.
She said she’d do anything. She just didn’t think he meant *that*..

Friends since childhood, first love, first everything including first heartbreak when twelve years ago Faith Baker left Bryant Cook and took an internship in Australia when at 22 he proposed marriage. Now back in Chicago, Faith plans to get Bryant back but he throws a big wrench her plan which leads to an extremely entertaining and fun second chance romance.  This slow burn romance was filled with laughter, tears, family, memories, and a whole lot of love.

There’s something to be said for people who know each other so well and know what they want and while these two had been apart for 12 years, underneath the hurt and heartbreak was a foundation most couples don’t have. I’ll admit I was worried that Bryant’s proposition was nefarious at first, that he was out for revenge for Faith leaving him all those years ago, but in reality he was protecting his heart and wanted to have her close.

I love watching these two get to know one another as the adults they’ve become all while having that familiarity of knowing each other so deeply. So many times in books with a back story like this, the couple will rehash the past over and over and only focus on the bad part, but in this book they focused on the good and the here and now and it was so damn refreshing.

I loved their intimacy even before they began a physical relationship again; it showed over and over how comfortable they were together as the built a foundation for their new relationship.

As I have not read the other books in this series, I don’t know the background on the other brothers but it is something I plan to rectify immediately. I fell completely in love with all the characters in this book and can’t wait to find out more about each of them.

My one teeny tiny complaint and while it didn’t lessen by enjoyment of the book, it did take me out of the story every time it happened, this is a family who lives in Chicago, born and raised, yet they often use words and expressions that are not American/U.S. used words and expressions. After a bit of research since this is a new to me author, I find she hails from New Zealand which explains why it happened, but doesn’t explain why it wasn’t corrected in editing.

I loved every bit of this story and I thoroughly appreciated the grand gesture ending, Working Back was my first book by BJ Harvey but it won’t be my last!
